Urdaneta canton (25,812 inhabitants in 2001; 37,650 ha) is located in the
south-east of Los Ríos province, 40 km of Babahoyo and 115 km of Guayaquil.
The canton was established on 11 October 1913, separating from Portoviejo. The
new canton was named for the Venezuelan Captain Luis de Urdaneta (1768-1831), a
hero of the Ecuadorian independence. Urdaneta was one of the leaders of the
insurrection that established on October 1820 the independence of Guayaquil.
Appointed commander of the troops of the Free Province of Guayaquil, he fought
in the battles of Camino Real (9 November), Huachi I (22 November) and Picunicna
(24 May 1823), and joined Sucre in the Peru campaign that culminated with the
seizure of Lima.

The flag of Urdaneta is composed of three horizontal stripes, two green and
another white in the center. Green represents the soil's fecundity while white
represents the inhabitants' purity and peace.
The coat of arms of
Urdaneta features the following elements:
- the flame of knowledge;
- two
towers meaning valiance and heroism and surrounding typical products of the
canton;
- a river as a symbol of the soil's fertility;
- above the shield,
the flag of Ecuador; beneath the shield the canton's name inscribed on its flag.
