Overview

Urdaneta canton (25,812 inhabitants in 2001; 37,650 ha) is located in the south-east of Los Ríos province, 40 km of Babahoyo and 115 km of Guayaquil.
The canton was established on 11 October 1913, separating from Portoviejo. The new canton was named for the Venezuelan Captain Luis de Urdaneta (1768-1831), a hero of the Ecuadorian independence. Urdaneta was one of the leaders of the insurrection that established on October 1820 the independence of Guayaquil. Appointed commander of the troops of the Free Province of Guayaquil, he fought in the battles of Camino Real (9 November), Huachi I (22 November) and Picunicna (24 May 1823), and joined Sucre in the Peru campaign that culminated with the seizure of Lima.
