The municipality of Riocabado (194 inhabitants in 2009; 1,977 ha; municipal website) is located in the north of Ávila Province, 35 km of Ávila.
Riocabado, located in an area resettled in the 12th-13th centuries, was named for Ríocavado de la Sierra (Burgos Province), the origin of the colonists. The newcomers were mostly shepherds, who could bring back cattle to their original mountain pastures. The longitudinal structure of the today's village, with the houses built at some distance from the main street, reflects its past of a village crossed by the Cordel de Merinas (Ewes' Path), a main route of transhumance.
