The flag and arms of Baterno, adopted on 5 April 1994 by the Municipal Council and validated on 21 April 2005 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 28 April 2005 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 21 May 2005 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 58, pp. 6,926-6,927 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Divided by a diagonal line from the hoist's lower part to the opposed angle of the fly, the upper part red and the lower part white. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: [Per fess,] 1a. Or a fire flame gules and sable, 2. Argent a bend sable superimposed in orle with a chain or. A bordure argent five crosses potent gules [Crown not mentioned].
The first quarter alludes to the chapel of the Virgin of the Fire, erected on a hill overlooking the village. In 1672, a man invoked the Virgin during the blaze that broke out in the Madrid bakery and was saved; the early dedication of the chapel to the Virgin of the Solitude was changed in the 18th century to recall this intervention; since then, the Virgin of Fire has been credited numerous miracles.
