The municipality of Guadiana (2,485 in habitants in 2019; 3,005 ha) is located 30 km east of Badajoz.
Guadiana del Caudillo was established in 1950 by the National Institute of Colonization as part of Plan Badajoz. The submunicipality of Guadiana del Caudillo was established by Decree No. 2,193, issued on 23 July 1971 by the Spanish Government and published on 22 Septmber 1971 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 227, pp. 15,382-15,383 (text).
The municipality of Guadiana del Caudillo, separated from Badajoz, was established by Decree No. 29, issued on 17 February 2012 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 23 February 2012 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 37, pp. 3,943-3,959 (text).
Validated on 9 February 2009 by the Municipal Council of Badajoz, the separation was denied by Decree No. 35, issued on 25 March 2011 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 30 March 2011 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 62, pp. 7,767-7,768 (text), because the Village Council refused to drop the Francoist epithet "del Caudillo" from the village's name, as prescribed by the Historical Memory Law. The Decree was nullified on 13 February 2012 by the Directorate General of the Judiciary Services of the Government of Extremadura.
In 2019, the municipality was renamed to Guadiana, in the aftermath of the change in the municipal majority. The former Francoist mayor, Antonio Pozo, who had left the Partido Popular (PP) for the newmy formed extreme-rightist party VOX and had been decorated by the Francisco Franco Foundation, was defeated by Francisco Moreno (PSOE). The first decision of the new mayor was to make the town's name compliant with the Historic Memory Law to get rid of the nickname of "Franco's village" or "fascist village" once appended to Guadiana.
