The municipality of La Garrovilla (2,346 inhabitants in 2019; 3,350 ha) is located 50 km east of Badajoz and 20 km east of Mérida.
La Garrovilla emerged in the 13the century as a hamlet depending on Mérida. Archbishop Bernardo II and Pedro González Mengo, Master of the Order of Saint John, issued in 1255 a charter to re-settle the area newly reconquered from the Moors.
Master Gonzalo Ruiz Girón issued in 1275 a privilege to facilitate the establishment of a new settlement, Algarroba. The town was subsequently renamed to Algarrobillana and, eventually, La Garrovilla.
La Garrovilla was granted the status of villa in 1599, separating from Mérida.
