The municipality of Valdelacalzada (2,711 inhabitants in 2019; 3,240 ha) is located 30 km east of Badajoz.
Valdelacalzada, gaining "independence" from Badajoz, was established as a municipality by Decree No. 42, issued on 27 April 1993 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 4 May 1993 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 52, pp. 1,162-1,163 (text).
Valdelacalzada was established in 1948 as the first colony designed by the National Institute of Colonization in the then barren lower valley of Guadiana, expected to be transformed in irrigated fields. In early October 1948, 10 families from Fuente de Cantos, 12 from Hornachos, 8 from Burguillos del Cerro, and 10 from Castuera settled the new colony.
The colony was officially inaugurated by General Franco and several Ministers on 7 June 1951. The inhabitants were granted the title of Colonists. Franco came back to Valdelacalzada on 6 October 1956 for the inauguration of Plan Badajoz, the colony being emblematic of the lower valley of Guadiana. The counterpart for the upper valley was the colony of Don Benito.
