Presentation of Cilleruelo de Abajo

The municipality of Cilleruelo de Abajo (268 inhabitants in 2012; 4,816 ha; municipal website) is located in the south of the Province of Burgos, 20 km from Lerma and 60 km from Burgos.

Cilleruelo de Abajo was mentioned in a document of the bishopric of Burgos dated form the early 13th century, as Celleruel de Hañuequez. Cilleruelo was derived from cilla, "a grain barn". The village was founded in the early 10th century by the re-settler Fañe Ovéquez, five leagues south of the village, deserted for long, of Santa María de Añuequez, previously established by the very same Ovéquez. King Alfonso X subsequently purchased the village from Juan Pérez de Guzmán and donated it on 14 April 1279 to the Las Huelgas monastery in Burgos. The donation act, signed in Toledo, was initialled by Queen Violante, Crown Princess Constanza and the highest civil, religious and military dignitaries of the Court.
