The municipality of Arroyomolinos (808 inhabitants in 2016, 11,512 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km southeast of Cáceres, on the border with the Province of Badajoz.

Arroyomolinos was the site of two prehistoric fortified camps, located on Morta del Pajar and La Herrumbrosa, respectively. Several Roman remains were found on the municipal territory, especially in Santa Marina, once a Christian chapel. A military building was also found in Los Castillejos. The Romans established the watermills for which the village was subsequently named (lit. the Mills' Stream).
The Muslims established another series of mills and a network of small defensive towers all around the village.

After the Christian reconquest, Arroyomolinos was formally organized in 1228 by Rodrigo Iñiguez, Commander of Montánchez, on behalf of King of León Alfonso IX. The first resettlers were Galicians and Asturians. Arroyomolinos was granted the status of villa in 1236 by the Order of St. James.
