The municipality of Huerta del Marquesado (190 inhabitants in 2018; 3,860 ha) is located 80 km north-east of Cuenca.
Huerta del Marquesado is a mountain village located below the Baja
Collado (1,841 m).
On 29 April 1959, a Douglas DC-3A operating the Iberia flight No. 42,
Barcelona-Madrid, crashed against the mountain. The pilot seemingly lost his way in harsh weather conditions (wind and clouds) and could not be help by the flight instruments of the time and the inaccurate maps. The villagers of Huerta del Marquesado and Valdemeca climbed through the
snow, guided by the smoke and flames emitted by the crashed plane; they
eventually found the 25 passengers and 3 crew members died. The crash
stirred a great emotion in Spain since all members of the national
gymnastic team but one were on board, including the emblematic Joaquín
Blume (1933-1959), national champion all-around since 1949 and European
champion all-around in 1957.
The Blume March has been organized since 2006 every April's last
Saturday to commemorate the crash. The hikers climb on old mountain
trails for 5 hours (16 km in length, 600 m in elevation) to the stone
cross erected on the crash's site, and then, to the top of the mountain,
which offers a circular view on the surrounding landscape.
