The municipality of Chimeneas (1,446 inhabitants in 2013; 9,033 ha; municipal website) is located in the region of Huéscar, 30 km south-east of Granada. The municipality is made of the villages of Chimeneas and Castillo de Tajarja (390 inh.).
Chimeneas emerged as the Nasrid fortified village (alquería) of Dullar. The village of Chimeneas was mentioned for the first time in the 16th century; the tradition says that the place was known as Cortixo de la Chimeneas, refering to the chimneys (chimeneas) of the village's huts used by the travellers as a point of reference. Yet another tradition says that Queen Isabel the Catholic stayed in a house of Chimeneas short before entering Granada.
Castillo de Tajarja, located 5 km of Chimeneas, was built around a castle (castillo), seized in June 1483 by Ferdinand the Catholic. Until the 1960s, the village counted some 3,500 inhabitants, most of them living in cave dwellings located in the surrounding gorges. Emigration to Catalonia caused the abandon of the caves and a dramatic decrease of the population.
A significant part of the inhabitants of the municipality lived in scattered estates. La Zahora, located between Castillo de Tajarja and Cacín, was inhabited in the 1960s by 60 families; the parish priest moved there once a week to celebrate the mass.
