Presentation of Dílar

The municipality of Dílar (1,680 inhabitants in 2008; 8,900 ha; municipal website) is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, 10 km south of Granada.
A dolmen, surrounded by a cromlech, excavated in 1850, proves that the area of Dílar was already settled in the Prehistoric times. In 1125, King Alfonso I the Battler besieged Dílar, and eventually expelled the Moorish governor, Temin Ben Yusuf, on 9 March 1126. From 1484 onwards, the place was fiercely disputed by the Moors and the Christians stationed upstream the town of Gabia; the castle of Dílar was seized on 24 October 1491 by Pablo Díaz y Ximenez.

Symbols of Dílar

The flag and arms of Dílar (municipal website), adopted on 24 June 2005 by the Municipal Council and submitted the same day to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 14 July 2005 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 28 July 2005 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 146, pp. 46-47 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 2:3, made of three equal horizontal stripes, the two outer white and the central blue, charged with a white snow star.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Azure a Pico de Veleta argent on fesses wavy azure and argent, 2a. Gules the chapel of the Virgin of the Snows, 2b. Vert a sera with two handles of esparto or. Grafted in base azure a snow flower argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

On the flag, the upper stripe represents the Sierra Nevada, the blue stripe represents river Dílar, which unites the mountain and the villagers, and the lower stripe represents the characteristic architecture of the mountain villages.

The Pico de Veleta (3,392 m) is of great significance for the municipality; the mountain harbours the southernmost glacier in Europe, while the road reaching the top of the peak is one of the highest mountain roads in Europe. The IRAM 30-3 Milimeter Radio Telescope of Pico Veleta, the largest milimeter-wavelength telescope in the world, is located on the mountain (2,850 m). The waves represent river Dílar, the town's namesake.
The chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Snows, the town's patron saint, was built in 1717.
A sera is a traditional basket made of esparto, used in the past to transport coal.
The snow star (photos), Plantago nivalis Boiss., is a flower endemic to the Sierra Nevada and, therefore, the symbol of the Sierra Nevada.
