Symbols of Zalamea la Real

The flag (photo, photo, photo, photo) and arms of Zalamea la Real, adopted on 4 June 1992 by the Municipal Council and validated on 12 November 1993 by the Royal Academy of History, are prescribed by Decree No. 30, adopted on 8 February 1994 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 18 March 1994 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 34, p. 2,101 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: A crimson red panel, in proportions 2/3, a yellow cross throughout, in width 1/4 of the panel's width. Charged in the center with the crowned local coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Gules a pillory or surrounded by the letters "Z. I" of the same. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The symbols were designed by Antonio Sánchez González, Director of the General Archives of the Fundació,n Casa Ducal Medinaceli.
The coat of arms is based on the arms designed in 1892 for the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, celebrated on 12 October in Huelva. Offered to the municipality in September, the coat of arms was blessed during a mass celebrated by Teodoro Falcón.
The pillory, a symbol of liberty (highlighted by the letter "L", "Z" standing for Zalamea) recalls that the villagers of Zalamea acquired the title of villa from King Philip II when the village was about to be sold to the Marquis of La Algaba.
