The municipality of Torrox (16,395 inhabitants in 2008; 5,100 ha; municipal website), located 50 km east of Málaga, is divided into two villages, Torrox-Pueblo (Village) and Torrox-Costa (Coast), the historical village and the sea resort, respectively. Torrox-Village, located 4 km off the coast, is a typical Andalusian village with a Muslim past, while Torrox-Costa, a former Roman spa known as Caviculum, is the industrial and commercial part of the municipality, today mostly living from tourism and claiming to enjoy "the best climate in Europe", a claim based on a scientific comparison of temperatures all over the Mediterranean Basin. After the Reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs, Torrax was granted the title of "Muy Noble y Muy Leal Villa" (Very Nobla and Very Loyal Town).

The flag (photo, photo, photo, photo) and arms of Torrox, adopted on 2 September 2008 by the Municipal Council and submitted the same day to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 9 December 2008 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 29 December 2008 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 257, pp. 47-48 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular panel, in proportions 2:3, divided in two horizontal stripes, the upper blue and the lower red. In the middle the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Quarterly, 1. Gules a castle or masoned and port and windows sable, 2. Azure a lion rampant or langued gules and crowned or holding a three-pointed standard gules, 3. Azure, 4. Gules. The shield surmounted with the crown of the Catholic Monarchs. Motto: a scroll or inscribed with the title "MUY NOBLE E MUY LEAL VILLA DE TORROX" in letters sable.
The castle has a double meaning. First, it represents the fortresses erected to protect the town from the Arabs in the Middle Ages. Second, together with the lion, it matches the two first quarters of the arms of Castile and León. The banner raised by the lion symbolizes the heroic behaviour of the inhabitants of Torrox during the war against the Arabs. Red represents the blood shed during these conflicts. Blue represents the loyalty highlighted in the town's title.
