The municipality of Muriel Viejo (86 inhabitants in 2018 vs. 257 in 1950; 1,136 ha) is located 40 km west of Soria. The municipal territory is completely surrounded by Cabrejas del Pinar.
Muriel Viejo was first mentioned in 1088, in a document establishing the
limits of the diocese of Osma, newly reconquered from the Moors. Muriel Viejo (Old Muriel) is, seemingly, older than Muriel de la Fuente (The
Fountain's Muriel), the two Muriels being mentioned together in a
document dated 1016, which relates the advance of the Christian
reconquest to the north of the province.
The San Juan de Muriel Romanesque church is located in Soria, in a
borough possibly founded by villagers from the two Muriels in the
11th-12th centuries. The Soria Charter prescribes that the grape
harvesters had to stop working when hearing the bell of the San Juan de
Muriel church.

The flag and arms of Muriel Viejo are prescribed by an Agreement
adopted on 6 June 2018 by the Municipal Council, signed on 17 April 2019
by the Mayor and published on 29 April 2019 in the official gazette of
Castilla y León, No. 80, p. 21,236 (text).
The symbols, which were approved on 27 April 2018 by the Chronicler of Arms of Castilla y León, are described as follows.
Flag: Rectangular panel whose length is one and a half time its width. Divided into two horizontal stripes, the upper, blue, and the lower, green, the two separated by another, narrow stripe, in width 1/10 of the flag's width. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms, in width half the panel's width.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Azure a three-peaked mountain argent charged with three pines vert cantonned dexter by a sun or and sinister by stars of the same in base waves azure and argent, 2a. Vert a Romanesque gate or crossed by a roebuck passant argent, 2b.Gules a medieval star or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed. When the coat of arms shall be used to represent the municipal administration and not the municipality, it should bear a bordure argent inscribed in letters sable "AYUNTAMIENTO DE LA VILLA DE MURIEL VIEJO. SORIA".
The Romanesque gate, used now as the cemetery's gate, once belonged to
the church of the borough of Iglesia Vieja (Old Church), located upper
in the mountains, at the foot of Pico de San Vicente.
