The Mouvement national républicain (MNR - Republican National
Movement) was founded in 1999 as a splinter of the extreme-right party
Front national (FN - National Front). After a failed first attempt
to take the control of the FN, the supporters of Bruno Mégret, then
vice-leader of the FN, organized on 23-25 January 1999 in Marignane
the "Congress of the National Front"; during the congress, Mégret was elected President of the party, which was renamed Front national-
Mouvement national (National Front-National Movement). Sued by the
FN, the party had to drop its new name and reorganized on 2 October in
La Baule as the Mouvement national républicain. Several leaders of
the FN, as well as several local and municipal councillors joined the MNR,
challenging the leadership exerted by the FN on the French extreme-
right.
In spite of its relative success in the 2001 municipal elections, the
MNR, like all the other splinters of FN, progressively decreased in
significance. In the 2002 presidential elections, Mégret received only 2.3% of the votes while his enemy Jean-Marie Le Pen competed in the
second round. Mégret's retirement in 2008 and the reorganization of
the party did not improve its situation. Today, the visibility of the
MNR in the French political landscape is very low; MNR is mostly
involved in the struggle against the "Islamization" of France and
against the incorporation of Turkey into the European Union.

The flag of the MNR (photo) is vertically divided blue-red with, in the middle a white oak leaf with blue veins. It is similar to the party's emblem, described as follows in the party's statutes (text):
Article 2.According to the party's website, "the oak leaf within the tricolor flag is the symbol of the struggle for our identity, of the attachment to our roots and of the continuity of our country. The oak symbolizes strength, nobleness and justice. In ancient Rome, the oak represented the civic virtues. It is shown in the arms of the [French] monarchy as well as in the arms of the Republic."
Name, abbreviation, emblem.
The association has for name "Mouvement national républicain", with "MNR" as its abbreviation, and for emblem an oak leaf within a French tricolor flag.

The supporters of the MNR sometimes use an other flag (photo), probably unofficial, made of the French national flag charged in the middle of the white stripe with a tricolor oak leaf (left part, blue; veins, white; right part, red) not reaching the horizontal edges of the flag.
