Bassens (7,842 inhabitants in 2021; 1,028 ha) is a commune in the department of Gironde. It is home to one of the components of the port of Bordeaux, the Bassens terminal.

The first habitats, prehistoric and Gallo-Roman, are concentrated around the church and along the Garonne. A Merovingian necropolis was rediscovered on the site of Saint-Pierre church.
Bassens has been under the economic influence of the city of Bordeaux since Antiquity. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the barony of Montferrand. Vines are cultivated there. Bassens is a place of residence for parliamentarians and merchants from Bordeaux. Nobles, bourgeois, merchants and Bordeaux shipowners built beautiful residences there in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The port was developed at the beginning of the 20th century: the construction of vertical quays connected to the Bordeaux-Paris railway line was carried out in 1915. These quays are equipped with ten ship's berths and around twenty cranes. During the First World War, the American army established itself in the lower part of Bassens to build a new port there: at this part of the Garonne, the site could accommodate port facilities in deep waters (channel of 11 m ). It built a wharf there in 1917 for the landing of its troops and equipment. The facilities accommodate nearly 700 ships until 1919. Some of these infrastructures are still used today. Masonry quays were built between 1925 and 1930: warehouses for petroleum products and sheds for colonial timber were built there. In the 1980s, a general overhaul modified the layout of the berths. A dry dock is established at Baranquine.
