The municipality of Grande-Synthe (Dutch, Groot-Sinten; 23,500 inhabitants) borders Dunkirk in the south-west. It was formerly a small (3,000 inhabitants in 1962) rural municipality specialized in vegetable and apple cultivation. The park of Puythouck (130 ha), including an educational orchard, is the main trace of that activity.
Ivan Sache, 1 April 2004
The flag of Grande-Synthe is white with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.
The coat of arms of Grande-Synthe blazons as follows (Brian Timms):
D'azur à une fleur de lys d'or, au chef d'argent chargé d'un lion
léopardé de sable (Azure a fleur de lis or a chief argent a lion passant sable).
A map of the châtellenie of Bergues shows this very same coat of arms placed near the village of Grande-Synthe.

According to Ludovic Leu, Grande-Synthe also uses a flag vertically divided blue-yellow. The colours are evidently taken from the coat of arms.

Vertical flag of Grande-Synthe - Image by Olivier Touzeau, 1 April 2004
The vertical flag of Grande-Synthe is similar to the horizontal flag, but with "Ville de GRANDE-SYNTHE" written below the coat of arms.
