The municipality of Vieux-Condé (10,374 inhabitants in 2018; 1,106 ha) is located on the border with Belgium, north of Valenciennes.
Vieux-Condé was first mentioned in 1215 at the village of Vetus Condatum. Often damaged by war, the village was particularly nit in 1645, when barely 6 or 7 houses remained standing.
Coal was discovered at Vieux-Condé in 1741. The town developed during the 19th century due the coal industry.
