The municipality of Dannemarie (2,259 inhabitants in 2018; 435 ha; municipal website) is located 30 km south-west of Mulhouse.
Dannemarie was mentioned in 1016 as Danamarachiricha, "Church of the
Lady Mary".
Dannemarie's landmark is the Carp Inn, portrayed by the Alsatian illustrator Hansi in his book Le paradis tricolore (1918). Hansi (Jean-Jacques Waltz, 1873-1951) was the symbol of the Alsatian resistance to Germanization. His colorful, idealized representations of Alsace, still featured on post cards and souvenirs, have significantly shaped the national and international image of the region.
The Dannemmarie National Necropolis keeps the remains of 389 French soldiers killed in August 1914 in Dannemarie, Gildwiller, Montreux-Jeune and Moosch.

The flag of Dannemarie (photo), used as a forked vertical banner, is a banner of the municipal arms, ""Azure the facade of a Roman church argent port sable a Virgin and Baby Jesus on clouds argent between the two towers ensigned with two crosses of the same".
The arms are shown in the Armorial Général (image); the companion description omits Baby Jesus.
