The merchant Cartairade founded in 1834 in Paris the Compagnie des
Bateaux à Vapeur de l'Océan et de la Méditerranée. He operated two paddle ships, the Méditerranée and the Océan on lines between Marseilles and Spain, Italy, Algeria and Egypt (Alexandria). The company was not very successful, and Cartairade sold his two ships to Mrs. (Madame - Mme) Régny, from Marseilles.
On 1 December 1844, Mrs. Régny lowered her flag and sold her two ships to the French state.
