An eastern Swiss newspaper published a portrait of the English Shepherd Neame brewery in Faversham, Kent. The company introduces itself as oldest brewery in Britain, officially established in 1698, but with town records testifying brewing since 1573. The ownership has passed in unbroken succession through five families. It has 303 pubs and hotels in southeast England, predominantly in Kent and London. Shepherd Neame exports to 44 countries including India, Sweden, Italy, Brazil and Canada. The reason for the newspaper article was the experience of a Swiss reporter in England who was offered a Hürlimann beer in a pub along with other types. He was very surprised to find this brand of beer, which no longer exists in Switzerland since it was bought by the Feldschlösschen brewery in 1996. Since 1967 Shepherd Neame has filled and sold the Hürlimann beer delivered from Zürich, Switzerland, because they wanted to expand their range of beers with a continental lager beer. After 1973 they produced it themselves under a license agreement. This is how England became a place of survival for this traditional Swiss beer brand (est. 1836).
