Description of the flag

The banner of arms of Pembroke College (Cambridge University) appears on this Flickr photo by “tdrury”, uploaded 20 Mar 2008: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tdrury/2347591481/. The arms may be seen on Ralf’s site: http://www.ngw.nl/catalogue/postcards/jaja/cam-pembroke.jpg and for a blazon Boutell comes to the rescue (The Handbook to English Heraldry, ed. Fox-Davies, 1914): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/23186/23186-h/23186-h.htm.

College founder Marie de St. Pol dimidiated her father’s arms (de Chatillon: gules, three pallets vair, on a chief or a label of three points azure) with those of her husband, the Earl of Pembroke (de Valence: barrulée argent and azure, an orle of martlets gules). See pp. 53 and 163, respectively.

A quote from the College’s official site: http://www.pem.cam.ac.uk/
“Pembroke College, founded in 1347 by Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke, is the third oldest of the Cambridge colleges and the first to have its own Chapel. Despite being located in the middle of the city, Pembroke presents a tranquil environment with varied architectural styles framing open courts and beautiful gardens. Pembroke is medium-sized by Cambridge standards, with approximately 70 Fellows, 430 undergraduates and about 190 graduate students.”
