Presentation of Capesterre-Belle-Eau

Capesterre-Belle-Eau is a commune in Guadeloupe, in the south-east of Basse-Terre Island. There are 17,700 inhabitants on 103.3 km².

Capesterre-Belle-Eau takes its name from an expression of the navy, "cab à terre" that is to say land exposed to easterly winds, to which has been added the complement "belle eau" (beautiful water) which underlines the important presence of this natural element. Many rivers, falls and cascades are scattered over the commune, making this place one of the most popular with tourists. The most famous of all its waterfalls is that of Carbet, one of the most beautiful in the Lesser Antilles
Christopher Columbus probably landed during his second trip there on November 4, 1493, hence the presence of his bust erected in 1916. In 1854 and until 1899, thousands of so-called free workers under contract, of Indian origin, were recruited from the plantations to replace the slaves freed in 1848. Evidence of this migration is characterized by the Temple of Changy, an important place of Hindu worship.
Currently, more than half of Guadeloupe's banana production is supplied by Capesterre-Belle-Eau.
