Presentation of Petit-Bourg

Petit-Bourg is a commune located on the east side of the island of Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe. There are 24,400 inhabitants on 129.88 km².

In September 1794, Pointe-à-Bacchus in Petit-Bourg was the site of an important battle fought by Republican troops (made up of French Republicans and black sans-culottes, free since the abolition of the slavery proclaimed on February 4, 1794 by the National Convention) led by Victor Hugues for the liberation of the island from the English troops who had occupied it since April 20, 1794. Following this defeat, the royalists allied with the British were executed.
