The municipality of Blato (3,593 inhabitants in 2011; 3,570 in the town of Blato and 23 in the village of Potirna) is located in the western central part of the Korčula Island.
The place was famous for wine production that was devastated between the two World Wars by the phylloxera epidemic. At the time it was the 6th largest town in Dalmatia, but the wine crisis forced many of the 9,000 inhabitants to emigrate. The Moreška knightly game/dance of Blato is famous.

The symbols of Blato are prescribed by Decision Odluka o izgledu, načinu i zaštiti uporabe grba i zastave Općine Blato, adopted on 28 March 1994 by the Municipality Assembly.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statute Općine Blato, adopted on 14 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 15 July 2009 in the Municipality official gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Blato, No. 5 (text).
The flag design is credited to Željko Drakulić or to Blato-born Vinko Protić, depending on the sources.
The flag in use is in proportions 1:2, dark red with the coat of arms in the middle. The prescribed flag is in proportions 5:8, bordered with a golden triple-wattle ornament.

Coat of arms of Blato - Image by Željko Heimer, 30 August 2009
The coat of arms shows the tower and the two churches of Blato. On the entrance of the tower there are crossed an olive branch and a grapevine leaf, representing the traditional products of the region. Under the Croatian triple wattle ornament, there are two crossed sabres and the tricolor cap of the Blato Company.
The arms were designed by Pero Čimbur.
Ströhl (Städte-Wappen von Ö-U, 1904) [stl04] shows a coat of arms "Azure a tower argent with a horse's head or at the doors", used on a seal inscribed around the edges with "UPRAVITELJSTVO OBCINBE BLATSKE" (Government of the Municipality of Blato). Laszowski's Coffee Hag album of 1939 [lsv39] gives a similar coat of arms.
