The municipality of Barilović (3,095 inhabitants in 2001, 307 in the village of Barilović) is located about 15 km due south-west of Karlovac, between rivers Korana and Mrežnica that flow almost parallely for some 40 km. Until 2006 the name of the municipality in the official gazettes was Barilovići.

The symbols of Barilović are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Barilović, adopted on 2 February 1996 by the Municipality Assembly and published in the Municipality official gazette Glasnik Općine Barilović.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Barilović, adopted in 2001 by the Municipality Assembly, which is repeated in the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Barilović (text), published on 14 July 2009 in Službeni glasnik Općine Barilović, No. 2.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is described in Article 8 of the Decision as in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms "set in the centre of it vertically to the length of the flag". This is a rare example of a Croatian local flag with explicitly stated orientation of the coat of arms, even though that this orientation is apparently considered as default and that only flags are designed different from this only exceptionally.

The coat of arms of Barilović is described in Article 5 of the aforementioned Decision as "Gules a bend argent between two swords bendwise of the same hilted and pommeted or".
The Statutes state that the red field symbolizes the fight for freedom in the history and in the recent times, the silver bend stands for river Korana, and the swords, turned towards dexter - the positive heraldic side - stand for the fight against occupations and have symbolized for centuries the struggle for freedom.

Ceremonial flag of Barilović - Image by Željko Heimer, 19 February 2015
The ceremonial flag, shown as a drawing but not mentioned in the aforementioned Decision, is a yellow gonfalon with three triangularly ending tails with golden tassels and a golden ribbon bordering the field. In the centre is the coat of arms, above it the municipality name in two arches and below an oak and a fir branch in saltire.
