The symbols of Kalinovac are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Kalinovac, adopted on 30 August 2005 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 28 September 2005 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 9.
The Decision was adopted a year after the design of the symbols had been established, probably after approval from the central authorities. We know that the symbols were already in use in 2004.
The symbols, except the ceremonial flag, are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Kalinovac, adopted on 17 January 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 26 January 2006 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 1. This is repeated in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Kalinovac, adopted on 1 July 2009 and published on 15 July 2009 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 9, and in the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Kalinovac, adopted on 28 March 2013 and published on 29 May 2013 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 6 (text).

Coat of arms of Kalinovac, official version and early proposal - Image by Željko Heimer, 16 June 2013
The coat of arms is "Or a privet bush vert fructed sable issuant from a mount of the second".
The wild privet (Croatian, kalina) with its characteristic black berries makes the arms canting.
An earlier proposal of the arms shows the privet as eradicated.

Genus Ligustrum belongs to Family Oleaceae, along with olive tree (Olea), ash tree (Fraxinus), and several ornemental and odoriferous shrubs, such as forsythia, lilac (Syringa), filaria (Phillyrea), and jasmine (Jasminum). The name Ligustrum, coined by Tournefort, is the antique name of the privet, but its exact meaning and origin are unknown. The wild privet is Ligustrum vulgare L. Other privet species were introduced in Europe from Japan, for instance, L. ovalifolium Hassk. (1844) and L. japonicum Thunbg. (1796), and from China (L. lucidum Aiton).
