The municipality of Legrad (2,764 inhabitants in 2001, 1,218 in the village of Legrad) is located about 20 km due north of Koprivnica.
Legrad is situated at the confluence of Mura into Drava. It is said that the river flow removed the whole town from Međimurje (then in Hungary) into Podravina (Croatia) without moving a single stone - the river switched the flow from south of the town to north of it.
Željko Heimer, 23 February 2003
The symbols of Legrad are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Legrad, adopted on 12 July 1995 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 14 September 1995 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 10. Decision Odluka o izmjeni Odluke o grbu i zastavi Općine Legrad, adopted on 22 August 1996 and published on 6 September 1996 in Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 11, amends some minor penal precriptions in the original Decision.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Legrad, adopted on 1 October 2001 and published on 5 October 2001 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 11, although they were adopted earlier. This is repeated in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Legrad, adopted on 23 January 2006 and published on 26 January 2006 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 1, in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Legrad, adopted on 2 January 2009 and published on 16 August 2009 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 10, and in the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Legrad, adopted on 26 March 2013 and published on 20 May 2013 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 5 (text).
The symbols, designed by Antonio Grgić were approved in 1996 by the Ministry of Administration (Glas Podravine, 28 June 1996).
The flag (photo) is described in Article 7 of the Decision, as follows:

The coat of arms is described in Article 6 of the Decision, as follows:
In a blue field a silver hoziontal bar, below a boat, above a golden star and a silver crescent.
The coat of arms is based on the historical coat of arms of Legrad, dated 1610 (Glas Podravine, 4 June 1971)
The silver stripe (a bend in the historical arms) stands for river Drava, beneath it is a brown boat, locally known as šajka. Legrad was once a place of production of such boats that were the main trade means in the region. The crescent and star, present in many old Croatian local coats of arms, are from the oldest Croatian coat of arms.

Former flag and arms of Legrad (reconstruction) - Images by Željko Heimer, 9 November 2011
The former symbols of Legrad are prescribed in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Legrad, adopted on 24 March 1994 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 April 1994 in Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 7.
The flag is described in Article 6 of the Decision, as follows:
The flag of the Municipality of Legrad is light blue (the shade of blue as in the flag of Croatia) with the coat of arms of Legrad in its centre. The ratio of width to length is 1:2.
The coat of arms is described in Article 5 of the Decision, as follows:
The coat of arms of the Municipality of Legrad is the historical coat of arms in a shield shape. Diagonally over the shield from the top left to the bottom right corner, a ribbon is set with two wide lines at the sides and four thinner in the middle, symbolizing a road and traveling, i.e. a bridge over a river (coloured brown). In the bottom left half of the coat of arms, in the centre of it, it is depicted a Drava boat or a šajka", and parallel with it there are lines symbolizing water - the boat is coloured brown, and the surface around it blue.
The top (half-right) half of the coat of arms is also filled with parallel lines symbolizing water and it is coloured blue. In it there are two common heraldic symbols: a crescent and a six-pointed star, symbolizing concordance and eternity. They are coloured with red colour. In the right corner there is the year "1610", when Legrad was granted its coat of arms, and the coat of arms is completed with a written inscription "Legrad" an its top.
When necessary, the coat of arms may be reproduced in colours or in black-and-white technique.
