Presentation of Poreč

The Town of Poreč (Italian, Parenzo; 17,460 inhabitants in 2001, 10,448 in the town of Poreč) is one of the most important tourist resorts in Istria.

Flag of Poreč

The symbols of Poreč (municipal website) are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi općine i grada Poreča, adopted on 28 March 1991 by the Municipality Assembly and published in the official gazette Službeni glasnik, No. 3.
The symbols were approved by the Ministry of Administration.

The flag (photo) is in proportions 2:1, vertically divided red and white. In the centre of the top square is the coat of arms. The central point of the coat of arms matches the crossing point of the diagonals of the top square. The width of the shield is 2/8 of the flag's width, the distance from the left and right edges is 3/8 of the flag's width. The coat of arms is set vertically to the shorter edge of the flag. When hoisted the longer edge of the flag is always set vertically to the base.

The actual flags are made with several variations in the design of the coat of arms. A flag with the coat of arms set in the centre rather than in the upper part is also widely used (photo). Here the coat of arms is much larger than prescribed, the shield's width being 1/4 of the flag's width.

The coat of arms is a vertically divided shield argent and gules between a laurel and oak branches, which are dark and light green, respectively, reaching the two thirds of the shield's height.

The municipal website presents the ceremonial flag, "to be displayed only in ceremonial occasions", as edged with a thin golden border with a golden fringe along the bottom horizontal edge. The flag is made of shiny material and is hoisted vertically from a special staff.
However, the ceremonial flag in use (video, photo, photo, photo) is of the same design as the normal (vertical) flag, with two triangular indentations in the bottom, edged with a golden string and with golden tassels at the fly points. A weighting crossbar is set near the bottom of the flag above the tails.

Table flags are made in different versions, including a copy of the ceremonial flag (photo), without either yellow string and tassels or crossbar, and inscribed with the town's name in Croatian and Italian in two rows under the arms.

The Town official gazette and the town's magazine Porečki vjesnik use a somewhat different artistic rendition of the coat of arms, probably used on flags and in other occasions as well.
