The Municipality of Davor is located some 40 km west of Slavonski Brod, opposite to the confluence of river Vrbas into the Sava. It has 3,259 inhabitants according to the 2001 census, 2,513 in the town of DAvor proper.
Known in the Middle Ages as Svinjar, the town was renamed Davor in 1896, following a Decision by the Croatian government dated 20 December 1895. The location made it an important place for river crossing (ferry). Today, the annual fishing festival is one of the main events in the town.

Davor is a Croatian male name (female variant is Davorka), but it can also be
found in other South Slavic peoples. Davor is a mythological being from Slavic
mythology and signifies the god of war. This deity reportedly had seven heads
and seven swords behind his belt, and an eighth sword in his hands. In English
it is known as Rugiaevit.

The symbols of Davor are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi općine Davor, adopted on 24 March 2000 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 22 August 2000 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Brodsko-posavske županije, No. 7. The description of the symbols is
not included in the published Decision; it is indeed stated that the
description and drawings are in the Appendix, which was
not included in the printed edition of the gazette. The Decision credits the design of the symbols to the Davor-based artist Zvonimir Balunović.
The use of the symbols is regulated by the companion Decision Odluka o uporabi grba i zastave općine Davor, adopted on 24 March 2000 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 22 August 2000 in Službeni vjesnik Brodsko-posavske županije, No. 7.
The Decision with the description was eventually included in Article 4 the Municipality Statutes Statut općine Davor, adopted on 28 October 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 15 November 2001 in Službeni vjesnik Brodsko-posavske županije, No. 11. This is repeated in the most recent Municipality Statutes Statut općine Davor, adopted on 29 June 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 14 September 2009 in Službeni vjesnik Brodsko-posavske županije, No. 12 (text).
