Description

Umm Al-Fahm (meaning Mother of the Charcoals in Arabic) is situated in Eiron Valley (Wadi Ara) on the main road Hadera - Afula (Road #65). Established in the 13th century, a Local Council since 1960 and a municipality since 1985. Pop. 37,000, almost all Muslims.
In my visit on 10 October 2001, no flag was spotted. I was told that in case of need an emblem on white is used. Nobody could tell me the colour of the emblem so I made it in green as it is the emblem's original colour - actually it appears as green on yellow, so I cannot rule out using those colours. Anyway the flag is only probable until further confirmation. The municipal emblem was published in the official gazette (Rashumot), 'Publications Gazette' section (Yalkut ha'Pirsumim), YP 3822, 6 December 1960.

Umm Al-Fahm is situated on the sloops of Umm Al-Fahm ridge. According to local tradition, it was founded in the 14th Cent. [other sources say !3th C.] and was probably a center of production of wood carcoals, hence its name.
During the Arab Revolt (1936-9) it was a base for the Arab Militia and during the Independence War (1948) it was under Iraqi Army control. After the war it was transferred to the Jordanian Legion but as the cease fire agreements between Israel and Jordan included areas exchange and the transferring of the main route from the center to the Gallile (today road 65) to Israeli possession, the village was transferred to Israel.
Today, this 39,000 inh. (2004) city is known as the stronghold of the Islamic Movement (South sector) in Israel.
In my visits there I saw only Islamic Movement flags and I can't report any municipal flag.
