The "وحدات حماية سهل نينوى" (English: Nineveh Plain Protection Units),
usually called Nineveh Protection Units, NPU emerged as the armed with of the
Assyrian Democratic Movement, when ISIS took
Mosul on June 4, 2014: they began recruiting personnel for their soon-to-be
organization with suggestions for the name such asas “Christian Regiment” and
the “Christian Army.” The official announcement of their existence (https://www.facebook.com/NPU.NinevehplainProtectionUnits
and
https://ninevehplaindefensefund.org) was made on November 25, 2014. In March
2016 Baghdad approved the Nineveh Plains Protection Units as part of the Popular
Mobilization Forces. Militarily the NPU was slated to operate under Operation
Nineveh Liberation Command.
Additional military Units in the area of same
origin are:
- KDP-backed
Chaldean Syriac Assyrian Popular Council created the Nineveh Plain Guard Forces
(NPGF)
- The Bet-Nahrain Democratic Party, another party now supported by
the KDP, fielded the Nineveh Plain Forces (NPF)
- The
Badr Organization, a Shia political party, created
the Babylon Brigades. The Babylon Brigades is a pseudo-Christian force. A
Christian leads it but the Shabak and Shia Arabs make up most of its rank and
file.
