Located in Nishihara Town Okinawa Prefecture and established in 1950.
The embroidered ceremonial flag has purple background with a gold emblem in the center and gold fringe.
The university flag has blue background with a yellow emblem in the center.
The emblem of the University of the Ryukyus is a circle with the kanji word "大學" placed on top of the image of a basho leaf and a quill pen. Basho is one of the representative plants of Okinawa, a material that has helped shape Ryukyuan culture since ancient times. The quill, needless to say, is a symbol of learning and freedom and supersedes the power of the sword. The circular shape represents the universe, the harmony of mankind. Nagaaki Anjitomi, a second-year student of the Department of Arts and Crafts in the Faculty of Education, designed the emblem at the time of the founding of the school in 1950. In April 1980, it was officially adopted as the university emblem.
