Symbolism (Former Flag)

This flag represents the sightseeing opportunities, cultural character and historical background of Chongup city. As Chongup made a fresh start through the unification of Chongup town, it represents bright future, hopes and vigorous jumping of Chongup city. This one symbolizes great development through dynamic image and also means the origin of Dong-hak and the traditional music, Nong-ak, in Cholabuk-Do with the image of a spring which the source of all life-continuously flowing out.

The elements represent:

- the twirling image of the bujeonji (a long ribbon or tag on a hat, traditionally worn by Korean traditional musicians at festivals celebrating the harvest)
- the city's development with the basis of agricultural heritage.
- the maple of Nae-Jang Mountain as the beautiful sightseeing city.
-the harmony and unity of Chong-Up city acts development continues toward a bright future.
- the moon brightly illuminating Chongup from the peak of the night (from a traditional song, Chong-Up-Sa) This symbolizes a seed sprouting new life.
