Army Flag

The elections in Lebanon were covered on "The World" last night on BBC4 tv. I haven't cropped the images too closely, in case the pictures or writing in the shot give a clue about the flags. The poster in this photo is that of Michel Aoun, and the flag might be that of his party. Googling on "Aoun" gives www.generalaoun.org/ which has the symbol which appears to be on the flag in this capture.

That is the emblem of the Lebanese military. I don't know whether this is an official flag.
Eugene Ipavec, 14 Jun 2007

Indeed it is the emblem of the Lebanese Armed Forces, of which Aoun was CinC between 1984-1989.

The flag of the Lebanese Army is shown on the Lebanese Army official website. I believe this is the same coat or arms used on the Armed Forces' flag, but on a total white background and the flag ratio being the same as the national flag.
Esteban Rivera, 12 Dec 2007

Odd that the army would use the multiservice emblem of the Armed Forces as a whole (swords, wings and anchor), and that this flag is not listed among the other service and military flags on the Lebanese Army site. This only confuses things further, as there are three versions of the previously reported red/white diagonal with the same emblem. Variants with and without the ring appear to exist; maybe the ringed one is official?
Eugene Ipavec, 22 Aug 2007 and 13 Dec 2007

The Army uses a white flag with the Armed Forces emblem. The Armed forces emblem is composed of two crossed swords symbolizing the ground forces, two wings alluding to the air forces, as well as of an anchor referring to the naval forces, the whole topped by a green Cedar which incarnates the Lebanese heritage, surrounded by two laurel branches symbolizing the glory and dignity, with the motto of the army: "Honesty – Sacrifice - Loyalty", written on the lower part of the insignia.

Lance Pennant

[Lance Pennant (Lebanon)] image by N.J. and Ivan Sache, 01 Sep 2002

French newspaper Courrier International, in its Summer Supplement sold with #613, 1 Aug 2002, shows a picture of young Lebanese soldiers with flags in the background. The flags are a triangular version of the national flag, with the cedar slightly skewed to the hoist. The flags are attached to a metallic staff with an arrow-head as finial. From the scale of the picture, my guess is that these flags are lance pennants, or pennants attached to something similar to a lance.

I can't make out the first word, but the second seems to be "Al-Watan" ("The Homeland"), so it seems like some slogan.
Dov Gutterman, 15 Jul 2007

The first Lebanon flag can be found at the Lebanese Army official website.
Esteban Rivera, 12 Dec 2007

As the French (but not English) caption notes, this is the first flag of the Lebanese Army (though the Lebanese Legion used a different flag in WWI.) Apparently still used in some official capacity.

In WWI the Lebanese troops used a white flag with red saltire, and black cedar in center.

Army Headquarters

The Army Headquarters has a white flag with its emblem placed in the center of the flag. The emblem consists of a black shield with a golden contour embracing the Lebanese flag, a sword and a pen symbolizing the power of the arms supported by knowledge, and both share in the duty of defending the country.
