I have scanned the Malawi President's flag from Album 2000.

The President of the Republic of Malawi has a flag in proportion 2:3 which is red with yellow lion passant (but not guardant) langued and armed black and below it a yellow scroll reading MALAWI.

I suspect that this flag is inspired, at least partially, by the previous coat of arms of Nyasaland (the other part of these Arms might also have been the inspiration for the rising sun on the national flag).
