According to Rodrigo Alonso Cercas Valadez, yellow is for mining, agriculture, and Etzatlan people's generosity. Blue is for nature, sky, and lakes; blue also represents friendship towards Etzatlan visitors. White is purity, union, and harmony; white is for all famous Etzatlan personalities. The cross in the middle symbolizes the path that every single Etzatlan inhabitant or visitor is meant to follow. The stars are for the municipal seat Etzatlán and the seven boroughs: Oconahua, Puerta de Pericos, Santa Rosalía, El Amparo, San Sebastián, San Rafael and La Mazata.
