Ooststellingwerf (Frisian: Eaststellingwerf) is a municipality in southeast Friesland with a dialect (Stellingwerfs) which forms a transition from Frisian to 'Saksisch' (the general name for eastern Netherlands vernaculars, like Drents, Twents, Grunnings), which resembles closely 'Plattdeutsch' in northwest Germany.
Flag: "A red hoist and a white fly with over all a walking griffin countercharged." Adopted 2 Oct 1963. The griffin on the flag is an old symbol for 'Stellingwerf' and can also be seen on the flag and Coat of Arms of Weststellingwerf.
