Kollum is in northeast Friesland, the seat of the municipality of Kollumerland
en Nieuwkruisland / Kollumerlân en Nijkrúslân. It is
listed as a "vlek", a settlement bigger than a village and smaller than
a town, with c. 5.000 inhabitants. The local vernacular "Kollumers" is
regarded as a form of "Stadsfries", a mix between Frisian and Dutch. Kollum
is a regional center for Kollumerland and Achtkarspelen.
The flag of Kollum dates at least from 1708, as Gerrit Hesman's
Flaggeboek has an image of it, a horizontal triband r-y-v. I am not
sure how long this was in use, or whether it was taken out of use, or whether
it is now used as village flag. The municipal
website shows a logo with a r-y-v flag, with in the center the municipal
coat of arms.
