Ruurlo municipality
Population (1 Jan 2003): 8.584; area: 65,20 km². Settlements: Ruurlo
(seat), Brinkmanshoek, De Bruil, De Haar, Heurne (part), Mariënvelde,
Veldhoek (part).
Ruurlo (also Ruurloo) is in northeast Gelderland, c. 20 km east of
Zutphen.
The flag is derived from the municipal Coat of Arms; according to Sierksma's
'Gemeentewapens' reminding of 'Derk met de höndekes' (Derk
with the doggies), a Wild Hunter (reminding of Wodan, Odin) travelling
through the air. The dog is a 'windhond', greyhound. However the
origin is very uncertain.
Since 1 Jan 2005 Ruurlo is part of the new municipality of Berkelland.
