Population (1 Jan 2003): 23.429; area: 96,98 km². Settlements: Wierden
(seat), Enter, Hoge Hexel, IJpelo, Notter, Rectum, Zuna. The name of "Wierden"
is derived from "Wederden", a watered meadow along a river - it
has nothing to do with the "wieren", "wierden", and "terpen" in the provinces
of Groningen and Fryslân..
Flag: white with a blue cross, of which the arms are 1/5 flagheight
and in the canton a yellow corn-ear and in hoist-bottom a yellow weaver's
spindle, both placed along from flag-corner to cross-center. The vertical
arm in this cross is at 1/3 of flaglength.
