The municipal arms is the Coat of Arms of the van Nijenrode family. It originated when Gijsbrecht II van Nijenrode merged the Coat of Arms of his mother, Maria van Persijn van Velsen with that of Nijenrode. (Persijn provided the crosses). The van Nijenrode family owned most of Breukelen and Kockengen. On 21 Jul 1949 the arms were granted by Royal Resolution to the municipality of Breukelen, and it remained unchanged after the merger of Breukelen and Kockengen on 1 Jan 1989.
