Wijk bij Duurstede is a municipality in Utrecht province, founded in ancient times as Dorestad along the Lek river. That rich town had to defend itself against the Franks, Frisians and Vikings, and the Bishop of Utrecht won.
The municipality consists now of the villages Wijk bij Duurstede, Cothen and Langbroek, totalling 23.459 inhabitants (1 January 2006) on 5.018 ha.
Its flag was a red over yellow bicolor with three white columns on red.
Recently the municipality adopted a flag based on the new logo (see the municipal site).
