During the opening ceremony in Athens, 2004, many of the teams waved small national flags, mostly paper or plastic flags, frequently printed on one side only. Athlets from Serbia and Montenegro had a national flag with the Olympic rings, in color, placed on the white stripe.

This flag was in fact the flag of the Olympic Committee of Serbia and Montenegro (Olimpijski komitet Srbije i Crne Gore), whose name until 2003 was Yugoslav Olympic Committee (Jugoslovenski olimpijski komitet). I have no informations about the date of its adoption, but the earliest possible time was in 1992, when a plain tricolour flag was adopted by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia; prior to that time, it was impossible in Yugoslavia to adopt a flag on which the red star would be replaced with any other emblem, even the Olympic rings - it was the matter of ideology. For my part, the first time I saw this flag was on 31 May 2001, in TV reports from the farewell visit which Juan Antonio Samaranch, the leaving President of the International Olympic Committee, paid to the Yugoslav Olympic Committee. The flag remained in use until the end of State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, when the separation of two states resulted in forming of separate national Olympic Committees.
