It is an untypical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on background quarterly divided into yellow and blue, usually belonging to (town rank).

On shield Azure a mountain Argent lined out Sable upon base wavy Vert and Argent the fess wavy Argent surmounted by two tunas Sable, above a couped St.Mary's crown Or flanked by two 7-point stars of the same. Mural crown argent with four visible towers, usually belonging to (town rank), and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CANIÇAL - MACHICO".
Meaning:
Crown and stars probably are attributes of St.Mary. The base wavy is representing the sea.
