Shield Argent with base wavy of Azure and Argent, an architrave (= girder, leaning upon columns) Sable, between the architrave's columns a milestone Azure, in chief a royal coronet Azure gemmed Or. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "FREGUESIA DO MARCO - MARCO DE CANAVESES".
Meaning:
The coronet is representing Dom Mafalda, who founded a hospice, and caused the construction of a Romanic church and a bridge over Tâmega River in São Nicolau. The milestone (Port.: marco) , or cornerstone, is a canting element and alluding to an old landmark, dividing the former communes of Fornos, São Nicolau and Tuias. The architrave is representing the archaeological estate of Tongóbriga, a Roman city and national monument. The base wavy is symbolizing the local rivers, especially Tâmega, Ovelha and Galinhas.
