Coat of arms

Shield Azure, St. John the Baptist proper, dressed in furs, holding a labarum with (white flag divided by red Latin cross in his left hand and a scallop Or in his right hand; at his feet a lamb couchant Argent, in sinister base a corn cob Or leaved of the same, in dexter chief a cogwheel Argent. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "SÃO JOÃO - OVAR".
Meaning:
St. John the Baptist is the local patron saint and name giver of the commune. We here have one of the rare examples, where he is depicted as himself and not only by his attributes or symbols, which he here keeps with him, a lamb and a labarum, both together are usually replacing the saint as a so called "Paschal Lamb". The cogwheel is symbolizing industries and the cob agriculture.
