Shield Argent, over a base wavy Vert and Argent a caravel Or ornamented, roped, masted and anchored Sable, rigged Argent between two corn cobs Or leaved Vert, in chief a goshawk Proper holding an inescutcheon Azure charged with five plates set in saltire. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "POVOAÇÃO".

Povoação municipality had 6726 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 6 communes covering 110,30 km², taking up the southeastern part of St. Michael Island (São Miguel). It is part of Azores Region (also a NUTS II and traditional province), former Ponta Delgada District. "Povoação" means simply "settlement".
