It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a white and blue gyronny (city rank) field.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 3 Nov 2007
The arms are Vert issuant from a base wavy Argent and Azure a two-towered suspension bridge Argent with port and windows Sable and in chief a cogwheel Or surrounded by two bundles of rye Or of four ears each tied Argent. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "TROFA".
Meaning:
"Trofa" comes from Arabic for "frontier", wich is not depicted in the arms. These in turn show the local suspension bridge. The cogwheel is representing industries, economic activities and progress. The eight wheat ears are alluding to agriculture and are also representing the former eight communes of the municipality. The suspension bridge is a landmark of the municipality and is also considered to be a "bridge of connection" between generations and communities. The base wavy is representing the little rivers Ave, Mamoa, Covelas and Aldeia. The green colour is symbolizing the floral and agricultural riches.

Municipality of Santo Tirso had recently it’s western half made the new municipality of Trofa. In 1999 Trofa Municipality was created from eight communes detached from Santo Tirso Municipality; since the scroll includes the name of the municipality this commune belongs to (added to disambiguate with another Alvarelhos Commune in Valpaços Municipality), it was changed to spell.
