What’s on the coat of arms — calabasses, pumpkins, mellons? The canton shows the regional arms, of course. As for the colors, the mentioned symbolism is nice, but I “sniff” also a Don Cossack influence. This city is located on the Don basin and the connection with Don Cossacks is quite probable, even if their main territory is further to SW.

The flag for Balashov city (Saratov Region, Russia) depicts watermelons (not gourds or pumpkins or squash), for which the region is famous. Watermelons grown in this region are shipped in late summer to Russia's major cities, including Moscow, where they are esteemed as a seasonal delicacy.
